it’s the question as a designer you are most often asked – what are the latest trends? it can be a challenging question to answer because there are a lot of sources to gather trend information. you have to understand what sources are reliable and how to interpret the information they provide. it is important to look at multiple sources when forecasting trends and the impact they have on your area or region and how you can best utilize them in your designs. there is no one size fits all mentality at play here. just because blush pink may be the go to color it doesn’t mean it can be integrated to all or any of your projects. a good designer will always be knowledgeable about trends in color, textiles, and finishes but a great designer will be able to interpret all of those trends into a scheme that works for you. ps – and a great designer isn’t afraid to tell you that the trend might not be for you!
it is important to know what is current and on trend but also just as important to know what works – how to interpret it and make it shine in your space!
some color trends we are seeing across the board for spring 2019 (and most likely all of 2019 with varying shades and intensities) are industrial copper – reflective green -matte black and burnished brass. ps – gray hasn’t gone anywhere – we’re still using it and finding new ways to interpret it too!
you can enliven your space by using these on trend colors and concepts in so many ways!
first – don’t think of a color trend as just a textile to be used – throw pillow or area rug - think of ways to incorporate a color you like in ways that may not be as permanent since trends evolve and change but in creative and fun ways that add interest and function to your space.
matte black – in this photo we used matte black as an island surround – i needed an anchor for this space and a backdrop for these super cool stools to shine and this ppg color was the perfect answer! in this one space we were able to combine the industrial copper with the leather selected for the stools and a hint of metal in the backsplash – the burnished gold for the metal on the stools and the modern twist of the light fixture as well. in addition, a more rust version of this copper softens the bench at the dining table. the space is still light, airy and fresh all while adding some more intense color.
don’t be afraid of using smaller intensities of colors if they seem too dark or heavy for your space. you don’t have to paint a feature wall or buy a pillow for each color that comes along! mix it up – change out your kitchen faucet – see the one in this photo – yep – matte black! use the burnished gold on your kitchen hardware or change out a light fixture.
the photo below shows how a light fixture can transform the entire space – this selection making the space more modern and dramatic while incorporating the matte black and burnished gold on trend finishes.
